ABSTRACT

SECURITY ANALYSIS OF OPEN SOURCE AND CLOSED SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEMS

In the world of information technology, there are two types of applications: open source and closed source. Closed source applications are those that are entirely licensed for a fee and require payment for use. Access to the codes of these applications is not possible, thus even if you use the application by paying a fee, it is not possible for you to make any changes and developments on the application codes.

The use, access to codes, and distribution of open source software is entirely free and is developed and updated by volunteer developers. Therefore, every user has the chance to be a developer. Despite this, the usage rate of closed source software around the world is higher than that of open source software.

In this study, the open-source operating system Linux and the Windows 10 Pro version developed by Microsoft will be subjected to security tests using the tools hosted by the Kali Linux operating system. At the end of these attacks, the results obtained will be analyzed, and comparisons will be made between these two operating systems with different structures in terms of security.
