The Purpose of Human’s Quest for Meaning and New Age Beliefs

The objective of this study is, firstly, to examine the relationship between the variables of the meaning of life and New Age Beliefs, and secondly, to analyze the relationships between these variables and some demographic variables.

In the collection of data, a survey form composed of the New Age Beliefs Scale (NABS) developed by Kaya and Aydin (2013), the Purpose and Meaning of Life Scale (PMLS) developed by the researcher, and items of personal information questions was used.

The findings demonstrate a significant relationship between the meaning of life and the variables of marital status [t(946)=6.51; p<0.001], gender [t(945)=2.31; p<0.05], age [F(3,933)=13.354; p<0.001], level of education [F(4,939)=4.572; p<0.01] and place of residence [F(4,945)=4.337; p<0.01]; however, it indicates no significant relationship between the socio-economic status variables [F(4,936)=1.871; p>0.05].

A significant relationship was detected between New Age Beliefs and the variables of marital status [t(946)=3.54; p<0.001], gender [t(945)=2.04; p<0.05] and age [F(3,933)=2.708; p<0.05]. Yet, no significant relationship was found between New Age Beliefs and the variables of level of education [F(4,939)=0.828; p>0.05], place of residence [F(4,945)=0.872; p>0.05] and socio-economic status [F(4,936)=0.298; p>0.05]. Lastly, a significant relationship was detected between the meaning of life and New Age Beliefs in a negative direction (r=-0.29) and at a significance level of p<0.001.
